Types of Colleges

Many times you will see the word “college” and that word will bring to mind different things to different people. Everyone needs training beyond high school these days but not everyone is going to be bound for a university. Here are some different types of schools you should consider.

Four Year College or University

These can be public like state-run university or private, like church sponsored schools. They offer bachelor’s, masters and doctoral degrees in many areas of study. You can major in many different areas.

Vocational Schools

These are sometimes called trade schools or vocational schools. If you want to train for a specific career like plumber or carpenter you may want to look at vocational schools. They also offer degrees in tech. Although the length of each program is different, they usually can take up to three years to complete.

Two-year colleges

are sometimes called community colleges or junior colleges. They offer associate’s degrees in different fields like computer, early childhood education and design. They also offer more general areas like history or English. Community colleges are a great way to earn an associates’s degree and transfer to a four-year university or college.

For-Profit Schools

These usually offer training in very specific areas like cosmetology or dental assisting. There are many programs to choose from. Programs vary in length but generally can be completed in about a year.
