College Testing

College and universities rely heavily on standard tests to help them evaluate student achievement academically. The following tests are ones you should be familiar with. You should also find out which test you college or university of choice prefers. Your guidance or counselling center should be able to help.

PLAN. this is a practice test for the ACT. Some high schools make the PLAN available to sophomores. You should take it as a freshman also just to become familiar with it.

PSAT  This is a practice test for the SAT. This test is also used to determine college dormNational Merit semifinalists. The PSAT is given in October/November and is targeted at juniors. You should take this test as a sophomore also just to become familiar with it.

ACT  This is a college entrance test that students generally take during their junior year or maybe in the fall of the senior year. If you take the PLAN and score well on it, you are prYou obably prepared for the ACT.

SAT  This test is similar to the ACT and it used to be scored differently. Incorrect guesses on answers used to be penalized but the SAT dropped that. The SAT was criticized for measuring the test taking skills of students rather than their knowledge so changes were made. Take advantage of the change and always guess if you don’t know the answer.
